Home Sweet Home! - 16 November 2013
First and only home cooked meal this trip. Everything was a highlight. Mummy made the Chinese chive, egg, prawn and tofu filled pancakes (jiucai hezi). Sis made the ribs, adding a generous sprinkling of sesame seeds on top, and daddy brought home Mr. Crab and co. who were deliciously fresh! I uhh… brought the wine. And drank most of it :)
Annie’s (Guomao branch) - 15 November 2013
Had a mild case of food rage by the time we sat down to eat. Why on earth do most restaurants in Beijing close at 10pm?! Susie needs to eat! Aubergine starter was very good although it came so very quickly I had to raise my eyebrows a little. Steak was edible although nothing at all on my usual haunt. Obvs.
Qiao Jiang Nan / South Beauty (Guomao branch) - 13 November 2013
The prawns were the star of the show (we fought over the last one!). Fish in chilli oil was also delicious. Aubergines were so so, as were the pumpkin “desserts”. Service wasn’t bad.
The Engineer, Primrose Hill - 3 May 2013
Can’t remember the slop of a main my idiot companion ordered for me but BEST EVER MAC ‘N CHEESE I’ve had in London. The pasta was cooked to perfection, the cheese gooey and moist and so so SO good. Still remember it now…
[Japanese restaurant], Devonshire Square, Liverpool Street - 29 April 2013
Wouldn’t have paid full price for this place but the sushi was not bad, just unremarkable. Wagyu sliders were good though!
[Italian restaurant], Barbican - 27 April 2013
Family run Italian restaurant near Barbican station. Unfortunately I forget its name. Highlight was definitely the lobster.
Mumbai Square, Liverpool Street - 26 April 2013
But for the 50% TT deal, we would not have come here. It’s a little out of the way and for a cheap mediocre Indian meal we could have gone to Brick Lane around the corner which would have been a bit more lively. Apart from the questionable service and warm white wine, it wasn’t bad, probably because it came to £10 per person. Boom.
The Diner - 20 April 2013
I forget which burger I had but this place is always good for a mediocre burger and a mean hard shake.
Qing Ning Thai Restaurant - 16 November 2013
After spending an age trying to find this place (it’s in a residential / pedestrian only area) and accumulating some minor food rage in the process, we sat down and ordered a beef salad, pad Thai, aubergines, red curry, leaf wrapped chicken and chilli prawns. The main highlight was the pad Thai; the rest of it was just average (it was apparently a duck red curry… very little duck found therein). The prawns unfortunately were a little funky. Kitchen remade it. Still a little funky. Not sure about the 5/5 rating on Dianping.
Xi He Ya Yuan / 羲和雅苑 - 14 November 2013
Didn’t manage to take a photo of the roast duck itself but it wasn’t anything special. Food was good but nothing to write home about. Da Dong is better for some quack action but glad I tried this place. Meatball with rice was very tasty.
BA 39 from LHR to PEK - 12 November 2013
Service was a little lacklustre but the crab starter and prawn salad were pretty good. Experience has taught me to always go for the uncooked items whenever possible.
Rocket, Bishopsgate - 30 April 2013
Although a chain and in the City, this place does a great pizza. Slutty waitresses too!
Gaucho, Fenchurch Street - 28 April 2013
Gaucho for breakfast = bad idea. Worst eggs Benedict / Royale ever… the muffins were dry and almost stale, the hollandaise congealed onto the eggs (obviously sitting in the kitchen for a while) and the service was horrendous. Bleugh. Don’t do it.
My Old Place, Liverpool Street - 27 April 2013
Perennially popular (but surely folk must have noticed the food quality declining?!) with its surly staff, this was where daddy and his cohort wanted to go the previous night and instead settled for Mumbai Square. Definitely get the fish fragrant aubergines (yuxiang qiezi) and the beef in chilli oil (sui zhu yu) and you’ll be happy. Even with the less than delightful service. Made friends with the owner too.
The Door, Cornhill - 25 April 2013
Good quality Argentinian fillet steak, and great value as well with 40% off (TT deal). Only had a nibble of the lobster roll so cannot remember how it tasted but judging by the photo, too much mayo in this instance. Desserts were very mediocre, despite their presentation.
